Having fun with sealife

I had a dream this morning that I was on a beach, and if you put your hand in the sand of shallow water, a baby octopus will be in your grasp and pulling away. It was awesome. Yes, I am a little infatuated with the creatures. They are incredibly smart, so squishy and come in such wonderful, changeable colors. I also have quite the fondness for cuttlefish, in case you don't know me. The eyes are just amazing, the pulsating light show moving down their legs, which they perform when inspired, is all so magical. I met a woman recently who thought the sea dragon was a myth, or perhaps a Disney inspired creature. Wow, if ever someone needs to visit an aquarium...that is all I am going to say on the subject.

OK, skateboards were tons of fun to paint, but what about surfboards? Taking on a new shape, simply inspirational. The look and feel of the sea. Would I like to do a real surfboard, totally! If anyone knows of a company with raw, unfinished boards, please let me know.

And now for something completely different...

Enter, the world of skateboarding energy. I got on my first board when I was thirteen, but then fell on my chin and thought that was it. I need all my bones intact.  I refused stitches and still have the scar to remember those days by. Now, thirty-four years later, my passion is back, but in a different fashion. Decks now serve as my canvas. I love the shape, the potential, and the adrenaline just waiting for action. 

While traveling in London, I did a photoshoot of a skate park under the Tate Modern. Boys in school uniforms were hanging out with the street skaters.  I was mesmorized by the grafitti, the skaters and the idea of creating boards to evoke the moment of action. Above are two of the resulting boards inspired by this environment.

Crossing Art Reception

Art reception, the artists role. Switch to "schmoozing" mode. A good way to get your feet wet in doing this is to be in a group show. All the focus is not on you, as it would be in a solo show. I watch for someone viewing my work and move in and talk with them. At this show I opened with "the darkness of the background reminds me of space, which leaves you feeling the sensation of vastness". The man I was speaking with totally picked up on this, and started a discussion with me about the piece without even realizing I was the artist. He just saw me as a friendly fellow patron of the arts enjoying some insight. I also spent some time getting to know the other artists, in a juried show such as this one, you have no idea about who you will be sharing the walls with. Everyone has a story to tell, just start asking questions.

Going Green II is now an annual exhibition that supports not only an eco-friendly environment but raises issues about the current trends and future fate of urban landscapes. This year, Going Green II, the second annual juried group exhibition of local and international artists, will be on view at Crossing Art from June 14 - August 14, 2012 and in conjunction with this year's QAX!!
