New Works on Paper

I love working on paper. Something about the texture, the feel, the smell...
I have been scrounging through Strand's bookstore,
on the lookout for pages with beveled edges, or images that inspire.

Mimicking the lines, posture and emotion,
I create my own idea above the original.

Great Beach Finds!

Back in the Rockaways, where winter is coming to a close. With the weather warming up, still bundled up, we set out for the shore. I really embrace the adventure and surprises that the sea has in store for me.

My finds ~

A horseshoe crab close-up.
And a Sea Robin, missing half its body....

And, a human Robin....

Thank you for your visit!

Spring by the beach, Fort Tilden, The Rockaways

Needing some healthy salt air, off to the beach we sped. Apparently it was feeding time! Fascinated by the interactions and expressions these birds exhibited.

Spring at Green-Wood Cemetery, 2019

Walking through the cemetery with eyes peeled, my cohort Robin spotted a furry bunch nesting in a tree.

Off in the distance a pecking is heard. Off to find the bird.
Can anyone identify?

Crypts are peered into.

Only the loyal stand by for all eternity...

I love every walk through this magical place full of constant intrigue and mystery.

Enjoy  ~  Callie Art

Sing for Hope Piano, II, 2019

Back downtown tonight to finish up my piano. Glazing is the last step in completing my piano for Sing for Hope. The time went much faster this year. That happens I guess when you are familiar with a project, vs the unknown. June will feature all the pianos out in the plaza, called the piano parade. I am really hoping that I am in town for it, their is a huge chance I will not be. I love this project and what it means for those less fortunate. It brings a piano to a school in need. It places pianos in parks for everyone to enjoy and experience. It gives with heart and soul.

My piano is about all of us living together, in one city. The crowds, the chaos of city living and the combining of hundreds of tribes. It is dirty, crowded, and people's anger comes swiftly on commuter mornings. Yet we all come together, all just trying to survive with dignity and hope. To make the best of a tough situation. City life is amazing, can be trying, and worth every second. I thrive with it's energy, the visual excitement, and the stunning stories of the people you meet. It is my life.

Enjoy!

Green-Wood Cemetery, Winter walk

I feel so lucky to live down the street from the famous Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. With it's Gothic entrance, the monk green parrots and the famous people buried within it's gates, it is truly a walk worth taking. I do it weekly, always in awe of new discoveries found there.

The life that sprouts from death add color to the vast pasture of grey headstones. Lakes appear in valleys, and honey bee hives are being introduced, to add life to a land dedicated to people of the past.

A wintery visit to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Brooklyn NY

A chilly Sunday was spent exploring Jamaica Bay, a wonderland of bird sightings. I was more interested in what we saw along the way, it felt like being in any small town by the water in Northeastern United States. No one really thinks of Brooklyn in this way.

It is the only "wildlife refuge" in America, administered by the National Park Service. It covers 9,000 acre, "one of the best places in New York City to observe migrating species. In fact, it’s a birder's paradise with 332 bird species sighted at the refuge over the last 25 years."

Lacking in my pictures are, surprisingly, birds. Only in the first image can a seagull be found, dropping a clam from the sky with the purpose to crack it open.

The town was hit by the hurricane Sandy in  2012. So most homes have been lifted and put on cement bases, giving the homes a larger appearance. It was quiet on the streets except for the wandering cats of the neighborhood.

At the welcome center they had bird feeders set up, teeming with smaller birds. We could have sat there all day watching the birds, but we pushed off onto the cold trail and enjoyed a walk in the wild.

The day was chilly, and crisp. Lots of ducks were about, nothing amazing was sighted.
